Holidays Category Domain Names Information

The definition of Holiday: Holiday has related but different meanings in English-speaking countries.

In much of the English-speaking world a holiday can mean a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation (e.g. "I'm going on holiday to Malta next week"),

In North American holiday means "vacation".

Canadians will use the terms vacation and holiday interchangeably when referring to a trip away from home or time off work.

In Australia holiday may refer to a vacation or  public holiday, but not to a day of commemoration such as Mothers' Day or Halloween.

Originally holiday is based on the words holy and day, holidays originally represented special religious days.

Examples of the term Holiday:

  • a day fixed by law or custom on which ordinary business is suspended in commemoration of some event or in honor of some person. 
  • any day of exemption from work (distinguished from working day)
  • a time or period of exemption from any requirement, duty, assessment, etc.: New businesses may be granted a one-year tax holiday. 
  •  a religious feast day; holy day,
  •  holidays. Chiefly British. a period of cessation from work or one of recreation; vacation. 
  • an unintentional gap left on a plated, coated, or painted surface. 
  •  of or pertaining to a festival; festive; joyous: a holiday mood. 
  •  suitable for a holiday: holiday attire. 
  • Chiefly British. to vacation: to holiday at the seaside.
